Hanging Heights For Light Fixtures

  • Standard 7’ of space to walk underneath ceilings lights not at a counter or table
  • Pendants should be about 72” off the floor
  • Chandeliers should be about 66” off the floor (30”-36” off the table)
  • Pay attention to sightline – Use glass fixtures to not block site lines if necessary
  • Mirrors are typically hung 5’ from the center to the ground
  • Vanity Lights can flank the mirror or be hung above

Light fixtures can be some of the most fun parts of designing a space; bringing character to any room. Lighting can be selected for multiple purposes known as ambient lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting. Ambient, or general, lighting is the overhead lights that are intended to illuminate the entire space. Task lighting illuminates a certain spot in the room where a task may be completed. Accent lighting assists ambient lighting in illuminating the space. They are often used to bring attention to a certain focal point in the space like a piece of artwork.

Chandeliers, semi-flush mount lights, and recessed lighting are common ambient light options. When hanging overhead lighting, it is important to pay attention to hanging heights as people will be walking underneath them. A good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that the average needed clearance would be 7’. If the ceiling is 8’, be sure not to source a semi-flush mount light that is larger than 12” tall. Chandeliers hanging over dining tables are best hung between 30-36” off the tabletop.

Sconces are great task lighting and accent lighting. They can cast light downward, upward, or outward, depending on the fixture. Often, they are found featuring artwork, paired with a bathroom mirror, or beside an exterior door.

Lighting is like jewelry for the space. Have fun with it and don’t be afraid to mix in a new style, finish, or texture!
